If Chuck had a dollar for every time told him that you should never leave an argument unresolved, he could probably afford his own damn shatterdome in the short span of his lifetime; of course, if he had a dollar for every time he ignored advice, he could definitely afford to purchase the entire PPDC organization. Today was no exception.
Chuck had barely slept the previous night, his legs wrought with spasms from the drivesuit connectivity overload during his simulation that afternoon. He constantly, unintentionally this time, striking Raleigh when the particularly strong nerve reactions struck his calves. Chuck did feel bad for his boyfriend, but he was so annoyed at his body for convulsing and not letting him sleep that he was a right bastard when they had to head to breakfast before their assignments that day.
Chuck has complained, made smart ass comments, bitched at Raleigh for every minute inconvenience. His shirt that he wanted to wear hadn't been hung up in the proper spot, one of his shoes had been moved further under his bunk than usual, his breakfast wasn't hot enough, just in a foul mood, even in Chuck's terms.
Raleigh, with the patience of a saint, had snapped back, if it could even been called that, as they were leaving the mess hall, causing Chuck to take out his pain, exhaustion and irritation on his other half. Raleigh and Mako were running the simulations in the Jaegars that day, Chuck was working the command post in LOCCENT. He had refused Raleigh's kiss with a Australian insult that no one but Herc understood, and got to his position, headset on ready to guide the pair to a successful simulation. Today, Chuck didn't have the courtesy to keep their fight, (one sided fight?) private, instead he made snarky comments, and highlighted slight misses or mistakes that Raleigh did, causing a full out fight over the intercomm. Then out of no where, the neural handshake and connectivity malfunctioned and the rest is all a blur. Raleigh was no longer responding, the simulation ended, Raleigh was still unresponsive to Chucks calls, now full of worry instead of irritation. The medics pulled him out of his suit and took him directly to medical and wouldn't let anyone near him for hours, not that Chuck tried. He was still sitting at his station, staring at the screen that used to have Raleigh's vitals in front of him. His father had come in, said something that Chuck couldn't recall and left him.
Finally in the wee hours of the morning, Chuck let himself rise, his body no longer spasming as it were and slowly walked to where he knew Raleigh would be, they practically lived in the med center.
He sheepishly walked into the room where his blonde haired beauty was laying, and awkwardly walked around to where Raleigh was facing, mumbling a lame apology for his actions, but they fell on deaf ears. Raleigh was still unconscious. He called his name loudly a couple of time, each time louder with more worry, but still nothing. With slight panic he grabbed his medical chart and saw that he hadn't awoken since everything happened all those hours ago. Guilt flooded him, and he collapsed in the chair next to the bed, grasping his hand, squeezing, calling his name, not realizing the stray tears falling from his watery eyes.
It had been an awful day. Raleigh just couldn’t seem to win at all that day. Even before getting out of bed, he got hit by his boyfriend – accidental, but it still fucking hurt. As they were getting ready, eating, and finally even during training. Insults and snarky comments raining down on Raleigh harder than the blows from Mako. Damn it Chuck, let him fucking win for a change, just once even. Raleigh can take a lot, but even he has his breaking point.
And it’s about then, that something happens. A sharp pain, and an extreme sense of dizziness and nausea overwhelms him, and he collapses to the floor. Memories float like bubbles in a sea of darkness. Images of people and places, began to fade into the thick blanket of black space that engulfed him. Stacker, Herc, Mako, other pilots, the scientists… one by one, memories of them, even their names began to vanish away forever lost to the darkness. Fewer and fewer memories remain, the darkness has consumed almost everything. Two more memories are about to fade; Chuck and those of his brother Yancy. These memories are strong in Raleigh’s mind, but the darkness begins to tear them apart too.
In the waking world, Raleigh remained still, while silent tears streamed down his face as his most precious memories faded away as well.
It was around five in the morning, when Raleigh’s consciousness finally returned, he opened his eyes. He tried to recall where he was – but, everything looked and felt completely alien to him. He sat up and looked around. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust. He was alone. Wait, no, there was someone in a chair not too far away. A man, he must have fallen asleep. He looked like he might be police or perhaps military of some sort. He saw dog tags around his neck, and, while he couldn’t remember anything specific, he somehow knew what dog tags meant. Was he being guarded? He shakily got out of bed. His body had been laying there for quite a while and he hadn’t eaten or drank anything since he’d been out. In addition, he was still plugged in to different machines to keep an eye on his vitals, he accidentally pulled one out, which began making all sort of noise. The sudden noise startled him, in addition to his weakened state, he slipped and hit the floor with a loud grunt of pain.
Chuck awoke with a jolt, the noises from the machine and Raleigh's collapse running through his veins like volts of electricity. He recovered quickly, his sharp senses honing in on the source, then he was at Raleigh's side in an instant.
"Hey, what the bloody hell are you doing," he says, but there is no heat behind the word, just worry, and a major relief that he was awake and moving around. he could handle scolding at him for the way he treated him and everything that came with that, Chuck was just happy he was conscious.
Chuck pushed a few buttons on the monitor that was still blaring, and then silence filled the room just as quickly as it had started. "Come on mate, grab me hand, and let's get you back in bed, yeah?" he says, already moving to a position to help Raleigh get off the floor, "before Newt or Herman barge in here." he attempts to joke, feeling awkward and guilty, all in the same moment.
Damn, that fucking hurt. He winces in pain on the floor as the machine blares on. That man who had been sleeping wasn't sleeping anymore, no surprise there. Thankfully he shut the machine off. Raleigh looked up at Chuck, his face showing pure confusion. This man, did they know each other? Getting off the floor sounded good to him either way, and he took Chuck's hand, getting back up to his feet.
"Newt? Herman?" Were those names? Was he supposed to know who they were? "Where am I?" he had to know as he sat on the bed. He tried searching his memory, but nope, nothing. He couldn't recall any faces, names, life events... nothing. Not even his own name. It was, terrifying. "Who.. who am I? Who, are you? What's going on?"
The blood and color drained from Chuck's face as he watched Raleigh's eyes search for answers and his voice confirming the loss. Goosebumps of guilt rake over his arms as if the shatterdome had been plunged into a subzero arctic tundra, instead of the current mild and balmy Hong Kong autumn. "You better not be pulling my leg about this, that fucking low." he mumbles and then clear's his throat to speak with a surprising calmness, he ignored the question about the irritating science personnel and focused on the answers that would mean more to Raleigh "You're in the medical wing mate, here at the shatt- er, at work. Your name is Raleigh, I'm Chuck." He pause for a moment, "There was an accident, and...you were injured. You've been unconscious since this morning." Despite Chuck already knowing the answer, he looks at Raleigh and asks in a more upbeat tone than anyone has probably ever heard him be in, "Anything sound familiar?" No sense creating an even greater sense of panic for Raleigh before they have any answers, even though Chuck's chest is as tight as it was on that fateful day in Sydney, all those years ago.
"Raleigh." Testing the name out. "Raleigh." Once more for good measure. He looks the other man over, trying to figure out more about him. If he was hurt, and in a hospital or whatever, where was his family? "Chuck." Was Chuck his family? He... couldn't remember. He felt awful, for himself, and for whoever his loved ones may be - he was trying, but nothing came back to him.
"I'm sorry." Chuck's tone might be upbeat, but even with really bad amnesia, Raleigh can tell he's trying to cover up his own panic. "Are.. are we... brothers?" He tries to guess.
In any other scenario, he would chuckle at the way Raleigh, tried to repeat the pronunciation of his own name with the Australian twang, but the situation was sitting heavy and ever so present.
Fuck. "What are you apologizing for?" he asks, making a face, damn, even when he has no memory, he's still a better at being a decent human being than Chuck ever was. "It's not your fault." he says, and finishes the statement in his head, ;it's mine.'
"Brothers?!" he says shook and surprise clearly evident in the way his outburst responds. "No, mate, not brothers, we're...close." he finishes lamely, but presses on to avoid anymore of those questions that would be overloading. He is saved by a nurse bustling in after seeing that Raleigh had regained consciousness, scolded Chuck for not getting her sooner and shooed him out of the immediate area, while she fussed over Raleigh.
He sighed as he flopped down in the chair on the far side of the room, rolling his eyes when she pulled the curtain around Raleigh's bed, 'pfft, as if he hadn't seen all of that before' and sat waiting while the many medical team members appeared from nowhere and disappeared around the curtain.
He didn't know how long he has been sitting there before he dozed off, knowing that his boyfriend wasn't dead, the rest they could work through, right?
Raleigh didn't really get a chance to respond to them being close before the med team came in. Physical and mental tests, so many questions. The worst part of all was when he was shown a mirror, and he didn't recognize his own reflection. The amnesia was very serious, but thankfully, he was otherwise perfectly healthy. Unable to do anything else for him, Raleigh was allowed to leave, given over to Chuck's care.
He was quiet, following half beside and half behind Chuck, looking like an overgrown wounded puppy. They arrived at last. Still, nothing. The room and everything in it remained foreign to him. He looked at Chuck, as though he were seeking permission to enter the room, before doing so. He looked around at things, desperate to remember something, anything - but being denied at every turn.
There was one thing he noticed, there was only one bed. Even with amnesia, Raleigh easily pieced together what Chuck must have meant by them being close. "You, and me? Uh, we.." he gestured to them both, and then he actually blushed.
Chuck face split into a shit eating grin paired with the amused raise of one eyebrow as he watched Raleigh get steadily redder in the face. It was a nice change from all the worry and strife he had been going through since 'the incident' happened.
After a few moments, he relents and pulls Raleigh back in from floundering with his words, "Yeah, mate, you and me, we're together." He says confirming Raleigh's speculations. "Going on a couple of years now, I reckon." he syes searching through his own brain for their timeline. "Took them forever to allow us to move into double quarters, even with it being my Dad." he says, rolling his eyes playfully and fondly at Raleigh. "You get everything you want with him, by the way, he likes you more than me."
The fondness slowly left Chuck's face when he remembered the seriousness of the situation. "Uh." he starts awkwardly as he grabs a couple of photo's from their desk, of the two of them enjoying vacations together and goofing off, and being completely them. "Maybe these might help jog a memory or two mate?" he says lamely handing over the frames to the sandy haired man.
Listening and watching Chuck talk about the two of them, he can sense the love the other man has for him. He's handed the pictures, and smiles. He doesn't recognize any of it, but, the two of them look very happy. "It, looks like a lot of fun. I, want to remember." His smile fades, setting the pictures aside, sitting on the bed.
Perhaps it was just random chance, but, when Raleigh sat down, he did so on his side of the bed. He looked up to Chuck who was standing in front of him, his facial expression showed worry. "This, has to be so hard for you."
"It was." Chuck says uncharacteristically softly as Raleigh settles himself into his usual spot on their bed. The next expression that falls from the blonde haired man's mouth is typical Beckett, that Chuck huffs a laugh and shakes his head, "Yeah, you're still in their somewhere." he says rolling his eyes playfully at his other half. "You're the one that's injured and the one that is going through tough shit, and yet you're worried about how I'm feeling?" he starts with a small unbelieving chuckle "I'm fine, I've been through a hell of a lot worse, this, this right here" he emphasizes by tapping Raleigh's temple, "this is a minor setback. This is nothing compared to what we've been through."
Every word clenches around Chuck's heart, guilt grasping him tighter and tighter as his saint of a boyfriend looks up at him with care and worry for Chuck. All after what his temper tantrum spiraled against Raleigh's health. It was all his fault. He didn't know what the hell he had done right to ever get Raleigh to look at him, yet enjoy being with him, and he'd blown it, Karma was obviously collecting today.
Chuck's demeanor changed as he went through the scolding of himself in his head, until he locked sad eyes with Raleigh once more, "Are you hungry? Thirsty? Want a shower or something? Anything?" he asked feeling a bit useless, he wasn't used to taking care of anyone but himself, which he was shit at anyway.
The Alaskan sat there, listening to Chuck, he was going to apologize again, but felt that would only exacerbate things, so instead he just rubbed a hand over his own right bicep as a sort of nervous tick, not really sure what to say.
He stopped when Chuck started asking him questions. "Hm? Oh. Uh.." he considered all of the above, "...mm, just, feel like resting, though, I guess I am a little thirsty." he got to his feet, looking for wherever a drink might be.
"Oh! Right, that would make sense, yeah?" he says stepping around Raleigh to their desk and opening the little mini fridge that they had secretly hidden behind a desk cabinet. Chuck pulled out a few different varieties and showed them to Raleigh. "This is what we usually drink. My favorite is the gold one," he says giving it a little shake to indicate which one he was referencing to. "I think you like it too though you always say it tastes weird, but you say that about every Australian thing i make you try." he says throwing him a playful roll of his eyes.
"The one in the middle is your favorite, always make sure that there is a case on every shipment from the US that comes in." he says, and then of course the other one is water, which is what medical wants you to be drinking but, eh, what the hell do they know, eh?" he says.
He's trying, he's keeping it together despite the guilt that is consuming him, but damn it, he is going to do what he can to make up the shit Raleigh is going through because of Chuck's attitude.
The Alaskan listens, and goes ahead and takes a drink from the middle one as suggested, and a smile forms on his lips. "Mm, I apparently have good taste." He looked at Chuck, "In, more than just drinks." The smile changed to a cheeky smirk in Chuck's direction.
Chuck is rarely speechless due to him rarely being phased by anything, but the obvious flirt was completely unexpected that he stood gaping at his other half like a fish, before he recovered with a classic Hansen rolling of the eyes and completely ignoring the blush of color creeping up his neck to his cheeks. He knew Raleigh liked him, obviously he did to put up with him for so long, but there was a part of him that was pleased, despite the situation, that Raleigh Raleigh found him attractive.
"Careful, your taste has gotten you into trouble before..." he says with a smirk of his own, which drops into a frown.... trouble like lost memories.
"I wouldn't know." Raleigh smiles, and seems to be taking it all in stride, and accepting that his memory is gone. He figures that if it comes back, great, but if it doesn't, he can't really do anything about it, so there's no use worrying about it.
"I mean, I'm sorry but, I- don't remember you, us." A hard truth, that he knows they both know, but feels as though it needed to be stated. "But," he looks at a picture of the two of them, "he," referring to himself, "looks happy to be with you. And, I owe it to him, and you, and myself, to work on the whole, us, thing." Okay, so he's not the most articulate, give him a break, he did just lose his memory after all.
The words hung heavy in their shared quarters, the simpleness of the situation brought into the light instead of looming in the shadows like the rest of the demons that have haunted Chuck over his years. If Raleigh is willing to push on, diving head first into their new situation, then who is Chuck to hold him back? The guilt will be there from time to time, sure, and he will have to tell Raleigh the entire situation at some point, but they would cross that bridge when they got to it, or when Chuck built up enough courage to do so, but until then, he owed it to Raleigh, to be in it 100% with him.
"Well then..." he says moving over to the American's side, looking down at the picture of them, a faint, fond, smirk appearing on his lips, "guess I really am as irresistible as they say after all." he snickers, leaning over and pressing his lips against Raleigh's lightly stubbled cheek, before ducking out of the way on instinct and over to the door.
"You up for a walk?" he asks holding up Max's collar and a leash, a teasing smile still gracing his features, he'll let Raleigh know he means his dog in a minute.
Good timing Chuck, Raleigh is about to give him a playful shove after that, but the other pilot dodged it for the door. The smile fades though, and a look of complete bewilderment replaces it.
"Uh..." Apparently the old him was into some kinky stuff, as far as he knew anyway. It was enough to make him very noticeably blush red. "You, want to walk me, with, that?"
He had wanted to go further, but the redness creeping up his boyfriends neck caused his laughter to bubble out. "Sorry mate!" he says between chuckles, "but you should have seen your face! Guess you're not into that kind of fun after all." he says before continuing with another set of giggles, that were very manly thank you very much.
"No, I need you to meet the other man than you share my heart with." He says fondly reaching out for Raleigh's hand. "He's with Herc right now."
"Other man?" Sorry Chuck, Raleigh is piecing it together still. Were they in an open relationship? Then, it hits him. "Oh! It's... it's a dog. ...right?" Okay, he's still not completely sure, and, he needs to be, so he's going to ask.
He nods, "Not just any dog - he's the most loyal and lovable ball of wrinkles on the planet." he says with a smile that shows off his dimples - a rare treat. He's trying. He owes it to Raleigh to be a better version of his previous self, might as well start off one a positive note. He just needs to remember no to be so elusive with his words, needs to remember that Raleigh can't, that he will be learning it all over.
"He's already claimed you, so don't be surprised if he rubs all over your legs." he says, a fond look gracing his features, "though I'm pretty sure you bribed him with the extra bacon you always get from the culinary staff every morning." he says rolling his eyes. "Everybody fucking loves you, it's really annoying." he adds with a half teasing smile.
Ah, those dimples. In all of the uncertainty, they make Raleigh smile in return, their joy is contagious. He can understand why he, why the other him anyway, fell for Chuck as he watches the other man talk with the warmth practically radiating from him.
Rals rubs the back of his neck and offers a sheepish smile, "Sorry?" Apparently the other version of him was a good guy, liked by people and dogs alike. "But, everyone loves him." The smile fades, "They don't, know me, at all. Cause, I don't, even know me." Honestly? Mentally he felt kind of like a child wandering around in a pitch black room, looking for a way out, or help.
He cleared his throat and forced himself to smile again, at least a little. "I look forward to meeting him, and, I'll definitely try the bacon now for sure."
It takes Chuck a few moments to catch on to what Raleigh means when he references to his previous self as him, and damn doesn't that bring up the wound from earlier that day that he is trying to bury. His smile fades again as his eyes search the floor for something to distract his guilt. He connects with the blonde again when he mentions bribing Max with bacon and he can't help but close the distance, wanting to get it out before he loses his chance.
"Look Rahleigh" he starts looking directly into the set of eyes he gets lost in on a regular basis. "I mean it, there are a lot of people out there who are so worried about you and some that won't know what happened this morning, but they all care about you." he takes a breath, "Trust me, you don't want to throw that away, even if you can't recall the details." he says looking back to the floor again briefly. "I'm not saying you have to be best friends with everyone, but don't shut them out, not forever anyway." he manages to finish, speaking from his own lonely upbringing. "Promise me that, you're like the only light in this place sometimes." He finishes, and the sadness that he was the one that snuffed it out settles into his gut.

on 2019-02-28 04:45 am (UTC)"I mean, I'm sorry but, I- don't remember you, us." A hard truth, that he knows they both know, but feels as though it needed to be stated. "But," he looks at a picture of the two of them, "he," referring to himself, "looks happy to be with you. And, I owe it to him, and you, and myself, to work on the whole, us, thing." Okay, so he's not the most articulate, give him a break, he did just lose his memory after all.

on 2019-03-05 03:12 am (UTC)"Well then..." he says moving over to the American's side, looking down at the picture of them, a faint, fond, smirk appearing on his lips, "guess I really am as irresistible as they say after all." he snickers, leaning over and pressing his lips against Raleigh's lightly stubbled cheek, before ducking out of the way on instinct and over to the door.
"You up for a walk?" he asks holding up Max's collar and a leash, a teasing smile still gracing his features, he'll let Raleigh know he means his dog in a minute.

on 2019-03-12 08:55 am (UTC)"Uh..." Apparently the old him was into some kinky stuff, as far as he knew anyway. It was enough to make him very noticeably blush red. "You, want to walk me, with, that?"

"Everybody fucking loves you, it's really annoying." he adds with a half teasing smile.

on 2019-04-28 05:30 am (UTC)Rals rubs the back of his neck and offers a sheepish smile, "Sorry?" Apparently the other version of him was a good guy, liked by people and dogs alike.
"I look forward to meeting him, and, I'll definitely try the bacon now for sure."

on 2019-05-01 02:30 am (UTC)"Look Rahleigh" he starts looking directly into the set of eyes he gets lost in on a regular basis.
